Problem Set 11   (total angular momentum, term symbols, normal Zeeman effect)

Problem 1

The ground state of fluorine is ²P3/2.
a) What is the degeneracy of this state?
b) Under the influence of a magnetic field of 0.5 Tesla the state is splitted in sublevels. Determine the frequency and wavelength of a transition between neighbouring sublevels.
c) Determine the energetic splitting under the influence of the magnetic field of the earth (ca. 0,5 Gauß = 5·10-5 Tesla) ?

Problem 2

In an atom one electron is in a 4f state and another elektron is in a 5d state. What is the orbital angular momentum of each electron. What values are possible for the total orbital angular momentum L. Determine all possible term values including the total angular momentum J.

Problem 3

Which J values are possible for each of the following states:  1P, 3D, 4F, 3G, 1D, 3H ?

Problem 4

Two equivalent d electrons form the ground state of Ti, (3d)². What term values are possible under consideration of the Pauli principle (use the table in the script). Which terms become possible, when the states are formed with a 3d and a 4d electron (3d)1(4d)1?
