Exercise 1:

List all symmetry elements of:

          a) an isosceles  triangle

           b) an equilateral triangle

          c) a square table

          d) an uncloistered  hexahedral pencil

          e) a cloistered  hexahedral pencil

           f) a man (approximately)

           g) an UFO (a typical one from Mars)

  To which point group belong  these objects?

 

Exercise 2: 

          a) List all symmetry elements of the molecule CH3I. To which point group belongs this molecule? 

          b) Do the same for CCl4.

          c) Do the same for ethylene C2H4.

 

Exercise 3:       

a) Determine the point groups of the following molecules in their electronic ground state: H2O, acetylene C2H2,  CO, N2,  methane CH4, ethane C2H6,  methylfluoride CH3F, benzene C6H6.
