Home work 7 Period 1 diatomic molecules.
Exercise 1: Bonding energy
Consider the following Period I diatomic molecules and molecular ions: H2+ , H2 , He2+ , He2. Which of these molecule are stable and which are not stable? Why? Place the molecules one after another in the order of increasing of their bonding energy.
Exercise 2: Symmetry of the molecular orbitals
Consider the molecular ion He2+. Present the total electronic molecular function as a product of three one-electron wave functions and answer the following questions:
1. Is the total molecular electronic wave function of the σ type, or not?
2. Is the total molecular electronic wave function possesses gerade (g), or ungerade (u) symmetry?
3. What is the total electronic spin S of the molecule?
Explain your answers.
Exercise 3: Molecular excited states
Draw the first two one-electron energy levels of the hydrogen molecule H2 and show the electronic configuration of the ground state of the molecule as a whole. Transfer one of the molecular electrons from the first energy level to the second energy level. Write down the obtained electron configuration which corresponds to the excited H2 molecule. Answer the questions of the Exercise 2. Is the obtained excited state stable, or not? Why?
