Objectives The behavior of atoms and molecules, their structure, bonds and spectroscopic features can only be described in an appropriate way by quantum mechanics. In an experimental approach spectroscopy tells us a lot about the structure of molecules and about dynamical changes on the way from reactants to products (femtosecond chemistry). During this lecture we will gain some understanding of the chemical bond and of spectroscopy in general, where mathematical and computational techniques are not treated in detail. An overview:
  • A recap of the principles of quantum mechanics
  • The chemical bond - an introduction
  • Spectra of molecules
  • Spectroscopic techniques
  • Lineear and nonlinear laser spectroscopy
Material Internet-Script: English version (Vasyutinskii), German version (Gericke) and exercises
Requirements basic knowledge of optics and a taste of quantum mechanics (PC III: "Structure of Matter" is great).
