Research

Our research focuses on the following topics, placed in the field of laser chemistry:

steric dynamics of elementary reactions
two-photon microscopy (in german) for elucidating the structure and processes of human skin
control of chemical reactions via state selective and spatial preparation of reactants
atmospherically relevant processes (e.g. OClO or BrO detection; Cl - or Br - quantum yield in the UV photodissociation of anthropogenic substances and the catalytic ozone destruction cycle Cl + O₃ -> ClO + O₂)
reactions of highly internally excited molecules with atmospherically relevant species
state selective collision processes in the vibrational ground state relevant for combustion processes and reactions in space
detoxification of exhaust gases by novel micro-structured electrode plates
chemical synthesis by electrically steerable microreactors
dynamics of three-body processes: the simultaneous participation of three particles in a chemical elementary process, although extremely important in combustion and atmospheric processes, is virtually unstudied so far. Complex coincidence experiments are performed in order to fill this white spot in the map of reaction dynamics.

A common feature of all our work is the utilization of various laser systems in order to initiate and/or analyze chemical processes. As a side product novel, extremely sensitive analytic techniques are developed. Frequently spectroscopic techniques (with one or multiple photon excitation) are employed, but gas chromatography and a special form of mass spectrometry (REMPI-TOF) are essential tools as well. REMPI-TOF (resonance enhanced multiple photon excitation - time of flight) even allows a discrimination of equal masses, e.g. CO and N₂, by their respective spectroscopic properties.
